Elan production: interior department
Take a look at the woodworking department at Elan and learn all about wood on our ships.
In yacht building, the importance of interior and exterior joinery cannot be overemphasized. It not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the vessel, but also contributes to its structural integrity and functionality. Therefore, selecting high-quality wood is a principle central to Elan's ethos.
Elan has its own carpentry workshop, a practice that has been maintained since the yard was founded in 1949. That's 75 years ago! Slovenia is famous her craftsmanship in woodworking and ranks third among the most forested countries in Europe. Elan takes advantage of this rich heritage to build its yachts with high-quality wooden interiors and decks, a tradition that dates back to the early days of the company, when the first Elan yachts (mainly ) were built from wood.
But every yacht has a wooden interior, right? But why is ours better?
Well, at Elan they take an uncompromising approach. Elan prides itself on its proficiency in working with solid wood, especially in applications where durability is paramount, such as interior details in teak decks.
Of course, for solid wood, there is a method for determining its optimal use. There is an attempt to balance usability, weight and cost, and that has essentially become an art at Elan.
Solid wood is used strategically in places most exposed to wear and tear, such as corners, edges and frames, so the yacht will last a long time, retain its value and, of course, be aesthetically durable .
For most interior components, we choose Okoume plywood, supplemented with natural veneers. Okoume plywood is known for its strength, affordability and resistance to distortion at various temperatures and humidity levels. Therefore, Okoume is considered ideal for marine use.
The transverse grain structure of the plywood enhances structural stability, making it a reliable structural element, which is especially the case with our E-line and GT-line, when laminated to the hull and used as bulkheads. Elan's premium yacht lines, including the GT-line and E-line, feature premium unblemished oak veneer on all visible surfaces, while the concealed parts contain only Okoume plywood.
Conversely, the Impression line uses distinctive, raw oak veneer for visible surfaces, and then birch plywood for internal areas.
